One Year Old Program 

Our One-Year-Old Program is an active, nurturing environment designed for a year filled with exciting growth and discovery. As children become more mobile, curious, and independent, our teachers provide plenty of opportunities to explore, communicate, play, and build new skills in a safe and supportive setting.

Children in our one-year-old classrooms follow a consistent daily schedule, including meals and snacks, indoor and outdoor play, learning activities, and rest time. Throughout the day, teachers document each child’s meals, snacks, diaper changes, and naps, keeping families informed about their child’s daily routine and care.

At this age, language and communication development are an important part of each day. Teachers encourage new words through conversation, repetition, songs, stories, and naming familiar people and objects. We also incorporate simple sign language to give children another way to communicate their wants and needs as their verbal language develops.

One-year-olds are constantly on the move! Our program provides opportunities to strengthen gross and fine motor skills through walking, climbing, dancing, pushing and pulling toys, stacking, grasping, sensory activities, and other hands-on experiences. Children are encouraged to safely explore their environment and develop greater coordination, balance, and confidence in their physical abilities.

Play is at the heart of learning at this age. Through both teacher-guided activities and child-led exploration, children begin developing early problem-solving skills, curiosity, creativity, and independence. Stories, music, art, sensory experiences, and age-appropriate toys and materials are incorporated throughout the day.

We place a strong emphasis on outdoor play and exploration, giving children opportunities for fresh air, movement, and discovering the world around them. Outdoor time provides a wonderful setting for developing physical skills while experiencing nature, different textures, sounds, and seasonal changes.

Social and emotional development is equally important. One-year-olds are beginning to form relationships with their teachers and peers, express their emotions and preferences, imitate others, and learn the earliest concepts of sharing, taking turns, empathy, and playing alongside other children. Our teachers provide reassurance, encouragement, and positive guidance as children develop these important skills.

Throughout this stage, we celebrate each child’s individual development—from first words and growing vocabularies to walking, climbing, feeding themselves, following simple directions, identifying familiar objects, and becoming increasingly independent. Our goal is to provide a loving environment where every child feels secure and confident as they learn through play, relationships, movement, and exploration.
